This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for January 16, 2008:
About a fortnight ago, during the holidays when our campus was on winter break, a man on the bus signaled that he'd like to stop at the University library. I told him it was closed. He replied that he was not going there and exited. A day or two later, we happened to be on the same bus again. We struck up a conversation. He's on the philosophy faculty (non-tenured). Now I see him about once a week, and have gotten better acquainted with him. We discuss film noir, jazz, existentialism, &c, &c. The other day we talked about Patricia Highsmith's novels and the film adaptations. He just watched "Strangers on a Train", and felt the whole hypothesis about the events, and the secrets kept seemed extremely implausible. Why didn't the protagonist tell his fiancee what had happened?
It has been awhile since I read the book and saw the film. I may read the book again, thanks to the "stranger" on the bus!

The balance beam and anything in the environment which would be similar....I loved to walk along a railroad track for example (on a disused siding). I still enjoy using the balance beam located along an exercise path in our neighborhood park.

Hope.....for "a dangerous but happy life".... That's the way KZ, my seven year old cousin ended her first personally written story book... a fairy tale about a princess who manages to cope, but even KZ knows there are no totally happy endings!

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for December 12, 2007:
One lifetime isn’t enough time to love and to learn to love. Infant love differs greatly from the love of the dying. Posthumous love differs from active living love. Love for the little fridge raider differs from love for the adult provider.
I believe that no one can overdose on love. Someone might become obsessive and possessive, though. That really isn't love though. When that happens, the obsessive lover really loves his dream, not the person he/she thinks of.
I believe Erich Fromm, Stendhal, Michelangelo, and a host of poets have given us some amazing insights into the emotions and gifts of love. However I love to learn about love. I love to love and be loved.
What role do dreams play in your life?

Perhaps other peoples' dreams play a more significant role in my life than my own do: I love to hear other people tell about theirs, but I rarely retain any memory of mine after I awake. Once in awhile someone will tell me that they dreamed about me. Coincidentally, just this morning before I read your question, a co-worker told me that she had dreamed that I could recite the names of all the first ladies of the United States. (In point of fact that's not the case, but why on earth would she dream that at all, about names of first ladies? Now it's true that my first name is Martha, the first name of the first lady, but good grief...!!)
Not too long ago I dreamt about something so totally foreign to my personal experience, I wondered if it might have somehow transited from one bedroom in another apartment in my building into my sleeping brain. Could such extrasensory perceptions occur, do you suppose? At the moment, I can't even remember what it was, even though I actually did remember it the next day and shared the story with co-workers.
I used to have rehearsal dreams quite often in which I failed. Often I would come away successful. I think those sorts of dreams kindle a determination within us to accomplish goals whether limited to a particular activity, or toward a lifetime achievement.

Sharing memories with others often brings out the best in me. (I dislike most in myself the tendency to hoard bad memories about people, which brings out very bad reactions when I see them again.)
What's your favorite thing about being alone?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for December 02, 2007:
Solitude provides my mind with an unbridled freedom of movement. That's my favorite thing about it, I think. I find, however, that while I'm alone the soliary state also allows me to organize my thoughts and plan my activities. I love to listen to music, to choose what I want to hear, to sing, and to play, as well as what I want to see on television. I love visiting art galleries by myself because I can spend more time looking at things.
I wonder if journal writing can be considered a solitary activity, since one is actually sharing ideas with one's future self, as well as future readers.

Agree to disagree???
Seriously:
Seriously:
- Peace, at least in theory, is good and attainable. Mediation is desirable. However terms of negotiation are less clear because of national, ethnic and cultural differences.
- In every language around the globe, nomenclature exists for objects and ideas known to the particular culture in which they are used or needed. Language exists mainly because we need solid terms to reach agreement on all sorts of things, be they as rudimentary as what to pass across a table, and how to make sure that everyone gets to taste something good at a meal.
What determines a good education?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for November 28, 2007:
If it succeeds at all, a good education should convince individuals that learning is not a finite proposition: A certificate, diploma or degree will not guarantee success in overcoming the adversities and responsibilties that are thrust on on every day of one's life. The simple fact that one has set aside fifteen or twenty years in one's life to earn these qualifications does not mean that one should simply stop studying, pondering, thinking critically about those forces that confront him or her. A good education hopefully will infuse the learner with a joy in acquiring new knowledge.
